positive reinforcement?..

More money for those in pedalaman..what say u?

KUALA LUMPUR 10 Feb.

honestly, i dont know what to say.. a good thing kot..at least with electricity and clean water, we wont contemplate much on having to teach in pedalaman..and i can continue dreaming of having an interactive whiteboard in my classroom.. :P

science?english?religion?wha?

I went to this speech held at my campus about...hmm..weeks ago. I can’t remember la. Anyway, the speech was about science and religion. The speech was given by two well- known figure in the education field. It was an interesting speech because i think, the way they (the panels) blended their thoughts towards both science and Islam was indeed very fascinating and 'mengujakan!'. It provided lots of interesting thoughts and I almost felt like I got a wake up call from the speech given.

Ok ok..the speech was about science in Islam and how we should actually relate our science knowledge with our creator, Allah the Almighty. Emm..To learn and master something about science is one thing...In order to get ‘keberkatan’ is another thing!! I guess most of today’s scientists have forgotten about the need to relate their science knowledge with God and religion. That is why we can see lots of damages being done despite those massive researches and science development the world has gone with! I believe the world would have gone better if all these geniuses and knowledgeable people do their researches or whatsoever with their religion guidance. O ya, besides relating science in Islam, one of the panel insisted that we can actually learn science in many simple ways, depends on own culture, environment and social background (which I personally agree with. can’t deny that.). He also mentioned that we don’t really need to learn science in foreign language (e.g: English).Yes, that WAS true.,(i repeat..WAS!)

But now, with the world itself heading towards globalization, I think the use of English in science teaching is relevant and the fact that our ministry of education decided to use English in science teaching at the first point is a very important move and can give a very good impact in our science culture. In my opinion..I think that the move (er..using english as a medium in science teaching) will increase our science educational standard (ok..so that we can stand tall with others). Hmm..I think it would be easier for students and teachers to learn and teach science in English because many of today’s reference books are written in English. Of course, we can still learn science without using English language. But it would be better if our students learn and understand science in English. I don’t know what others might think, but to me, all i can say is that..it is a need for today’s generation to master both science and the language as well.

Anyway..the speech was great (seriously). It has opened up my mind and it makes me think differently now (different view, different perspective!). till then, caucincau~

Something worth noting.

Give present teachers a chance
07 Feb 2007NAZREEN T. A. Mersing
ALLOW me to offer my two sen worth on the issue of "incompetent" English teachers by Michael Shum ("Use this aging resource", NST, Feb 2).His suggestion to use retired teachers who had their training at distinguished colleges in the United Kingdom, though plausible and recommendable, reflects badly on the present English teachers who are still learning their way and trying to satisfy everyone concerned. This "deplorable decline in the teaching of the English language" has indeed become a problem, but there are still a lot of competent teachers like me who were also "tutored by native speakers during their teacher training days in Britain".Give the present teachers a chance before turning to instant solutions like hiring native speakers, resorting to the "use of the aging resource" or even putting in extra hours into English lessons.Students from this Internet and technology-savvy generation are sometimes more resourceful than the teachers themselves.Don't let them look down on teachers even further by always blaming them for the decline in English competency.

TEACHING ENGLISH: Hire right teachers
08 Feb 2007MICHAEL SHUM, Kuala Lumpur
WITH reference to the comments on English teaching by Nazreen T.A. of Mersing ("Give present teachers a chance" — NST, Feb 5), I have to give her the benefit of the doubt about giving present teachers a chance provided such teachers take the trouble to improve their command of the English language in the first place.I have come across applications from potential English teachers and lecturers who can hardly string a decent sentence in English. Can we entrust them to teach English? It would be like the blind leading the blind. They have done a lot of harm. My suggestion to use competent retired teachers is in line with other proposals like hiring native speakers and extra hours for English lessons.

Everyone is out and about talking about the declining of English among students and how it is related to the incompetency of the current English teachers. I hope those two letters will enlighten us and prove to people what we are not and that we certainly can do it.
